Citizen Science and the SDGs

How can CS support the scientific collection of data

Traditional data sources are not sufficient for measuring the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Citizen science (CS) is one of the eight pillars of Open science; it’s a collaborative form of science. Citizen science is an emerging example of a non-traditional data source that is already making a significant contribution in hard and soft sciences. In this context, the presentation will highlight the role of citizen science and citizen scientists in supporting Sustainable Development Goals by collecting massive sets of data and multiplying the data sources. Particularly, biodiversity, climate change and conservation are three areas with a strong citizen-science presence, where contributions are already in evidence.

Citizen science has the potential to transform researchers’ approach to data collection and and how they address scientific issues related to the Sustainable Development Goals.
